Raspberry Pi

The Raspberry Pi is a series of small single-board computers developed in the United Kingdom by the Raspberry Pi Foundation to promote teaching of basic computer science in schools and in developing countries.

The original model became far more popular than anticipated, selling outside its target market for uses such as robotics.
It is now widely used even in research projects, such as for weather monitoring because of its low cost and portability.
It does not include peripherals (such as keyboards and mice) or cases.
However, some accessories have been included in several official and unofficial bundles.

After the release of the second board type, the Raspberry Pi Foundation set up a new entity, named Raspberry Pi Trading, and installed Eben Upton as CEO, with the responsibility of developing technology.
The Foundation was rededicated as an educational charity for promoting the teaching of basic computer science in schools and developing countries.

The Raspberry Pi is one of the best-selling British computers.
As of December 2019, more than thirty million boards have been sold. Most Pis are made in a Sony factory in Pencoed, Wales, while others are made in China and Japan..

My weather station.
I have a weather station all loaded up with sensors, situated just outside in the back garden.
This data is then sent wirelessly to a readout near my desk, that tells me max, min temperatures both outside and inside, the humidity inside and outside, the barometric pressure, whether it is rising or falling and any rainfall.

It could have other sensors such as soil moisture and soil temperature for gardening purposes.

This data is then transferred to a raspberry pi computer that then uploads this data to the web.
This transfer is done every few minutes day and night
The pi uses very little power, running flat out the maximum is about 15 watts. Most of the time it is idling away just sipping at the power.

Once the pi has been set up, it runs without a monitor, keyboard or mouse, 24 hours a day, seven days a week etc. No noise, no fans, just purring away in the corner.
